This is a particular frustration for me: these new insincere definitions society is giving to words. We’re so comfortable and safe
feeling that we can treat a word like Patriotism as an opinion indicator. We get to pretend we are pacifists – intellectually and morally superior to the ignoramuses who think war is ever needed – and associate hurt feelings to the word Patriot.
There are plenty of words to describe an idiot who is in complete support of a regime, and usually names specific to regime. What would we call the soldiers right now deploying to Afghanistan who voted for McCain? They’re not patriots? Hell, most the soldiers I’ve had conversation with have a list of problems with the Administration (Clinton, Bush, or Obama) – or just don’t give a shit – but either way do their damn job.
Obama just did another Bush speech – “dismantle and destroy”. I guess he’s transitioning his campaign focus a bit. Hell, he even called the attempted terrorist an “attempted terrorists.” Of course, right now he’s not being interrogated. He’s being treated for burns and enjoying the right to remain silent with his lawyer – complements of the people he’s trying to kill. He was also bragging about there being 25 more of him…
You’ve probably heard the story, the SEALs who captured that jerk who is openly responsible for burning and displaying the contractors in Fallujah are being prosecuted for – according to the detained jerk – punching him in the little belly and hurting his widdle wip.

Isn’t this discussion about the healthcare bill funding abortion misguided? And for that matter, isn’t the whole abortion rights / anti-abortion argument misguided? Are there really that many people who think they should tell gynecologists how best to treat their patients’ complicated illnesses? Are there really that many people willing to allow our society to use abortion as a form of birth control? And aren’t abortion clinics exploiting women – physically and psychologically? And who the hell becomes and abortionist?
It’s hard to say what will happen in Iran. I’d like to think the opposition would take over and put together a rational government. But we’re a long way from there now. A lot of people will have to die. The clergy will require that…
Saudi Arabia has done 40 public executions already this year. It must not be working that well to deter crime.
How is it for you? The day’s I believe in a Christian God I’m against the death penalty. But the days I’m feeling more like a non-theist I’m very fond of killing or otherwise harming – bringing justice to – those who harm others.
It would be very easy to make the case, looking at today’s leaders, and especially easy if you look at history and the most powerful leaders – that they were crazy or had complex mental problems including psychosis. Mao, Stalin, Hitler – to name a few resounding examples, listed in order of who killed the most millions of people for reasons of their beliefs (far outweighing any of those evil theist and their hooky religions) and for reasons of paranoia and general maintenance of power at any and all costs.
